Artist Statement

I am a visual person . You know how some people hear voices ? Well , I see shapes . I will see a shape in nature or architecture and it sticks in my brain . Then it won't leave me alone until I use it in a design or project I'm working on . You could say it haunts me , but in a similar way that a chord or a rhythm haunts a musician .

I began making furniture while living in the Ozark Mountains in the 1970's , blending the Arts and Crafts design with the elegant , fine lines of the Japanese tradition . While the furniture is seemingly delicate to the eye , it is sturdy and comfortable . It has always been important to me when a piece is in a gallery , or on display elsewhere , for people to be able to have a seat . Try it out . See how it feels beneath you , how it comforts you .

When I am working in my shop , each piece of wood has its own characteristics , its own personality in a sense . When I shape it , form it just right , and place it in next to another piece , it is like putting a puzzle together , a puzzle that when pieced together just right , can fill the room with amazing energy .
